Better Sleep is a Habit

Not getting enough sleep is both a cause and an effect of chronic stress. Sleeping resets our system and it’s also when we learn. Not getting enough sleep leads to all kinds of health and productivity issues which in turn lead to more stress. Being under constant stress leads to an energizing cocktail in our bodies that makes it hard to fall asleep.

We must focus on this all important habit of sleep. It’s just as important as what you eat and how much you move for your overall health.

Many of my clients tell me they have issues falling asleep. Here are three common reasons for not being able to fall asleep.

Fear of Missing Out. The biggest symptom of this is not being able to put down your phone or turn off the news one hour before going to bed. You are letting other people’s thoughts and opinions into your brain when you are supposed to be winding down. Your brain continues to work on those, especially anything controversial, making it difficult to fall asleep. Put a plan in place to stop receiving input. Start small and gradually increase the amount of time you abstain from input before bed.

Worrying. Replaying a situation over and over again in your head accomplishes nothing, but your brain thinks it’s doing something.. You may even be having a conversation with yourself to try and stop it. Keep a pad and pen by your bedside and write down everything you are thinking and a plan for one thing you will do tomorrow to actually deal with it. You’ll be amazed how quickly the spin will stop once you do this.

Overworking. Thinking that  “I just have to finish this one thing so I can catch up” or “If I don’t finish this, I will be behind” leads to overworking. In reality, when you are thinking this, the only thing you are behind on or need to catch up on is your sleep. When you are refreshed, you are so much more productive and focused.
