This week I’ve been learning about certainty and how our brain craves it because it wants to keep us safe. Funny thing is, the only certainty we can have in life is how we are going to think or react in any given situation. There is no certainty outside of ourselves…except for this very moment in time.
I am certain that I can be ok no matter what and figure out how to move forward from any situation. This is called self certainty.
I am not 100% certain about any moment in time except this very second. I’m 100% certain that I’m typing this. I’m not 100% certain that I will keep typing this, therefore I’m uncertain.
Anxiety comes from letting our brain run amuck trying to make things certain by trying to control circumstances outside of ourselves. I’ll repeat, you cannot control anything but yourself and how you think and respond.
You are probably thinking I am nuts by now, but I really want you to think about this. Can you predict what someone will say or do in any given situation with 100% certainty? Can you predict how our current circumstances in the world will turn out with 100% certainty? My bet is no.
What if’ing yourself into an anxious mess creates inaction and results in no progress, my friends.
I think it’s better to accept the uncertainty and just focus on your next best action given the information you currently have. You’ll at least accomplish something and keep moving forward with less drama.
